DESIGN
Upon entry, guests pass through a “C” shaped portal, which symbolizes Cathy’s home. Portraits of her family and the main characters of the show line the walls. This is the hall of “Cognition”- a space where Cathy recognizes her life and relationships with family and friends are about to change. The next space is a room of “Contemplation” –a cozy, sanctuary in which to immerse oneself in quiet thought. The focal point of this room is a sinuous hourglass form hewn from sheer drapery. The next step in the progression is the bathroom-the room of “Confusion.” Cathy finds herself flooded with thoughts of “what if?” and is overcome with an overpowering feeling that time is slipping away. This space features a dramatic light show and a host of optical illusions that will captivate and intrigue the visitor. Finally the journey through Cathy’s mind culminates in the room of “Clarity”- a whimsical take on her living room from the show. The most captivating element is a couch swinging from the ceiling, which symbolizes Cathy’s need to rise above her situation, and make the rest of her life truly exceptional. In the corner of this room is living wall with a 3D TV that depicts the healing and calming powers of nature.
CONTEXT
Part of Showtime’s Show House for 2010, a bedroom, bathroom and closet of Penthouse 1 at Cassa New York was allocated to BG Studio. As visitors progress through this space, they are taken on Cathy’s inner journey, one that is anchored by four key “C” words; cognition, contemplation, confusion and clarity. A profound sense of the passing of time is central to the design of each space.
